ToggleHow many days do you need to visit Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Humantay Lagoon?
Planning a trip that combines Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Humantay Lagoon requires a balance between your available time, acclimatization, and the pace of the itinerary. In these three destinations, you’ll find history, Andean landscapes, and iconic experiences from southern Peru, so a smart distribution of days will let you enjoy the trip calmly and comfortably.
Recommended duration: 6 days
Six days give you enough time to discover Cusco progressively, adapt to the altitude, and visit the city’s main attractions without overloading your schedule. This is enough to explore the city, take a full-day excursion to Humantay Lagoon, and dedicate an entire day to visiting Machu Picchu.
Trip structure
During the first days, we prioritize acclimatization with a cultural tour of Cusco and its surroundings, keeping transfers short and manageable. The hike to Humantay Lagoon is scheduled once your body is better adapted to the altitude, so the experience is more enjoyable and less physically demanding. Finally, Machu Picchu is the perfect finale for your trip, where you can explore the site calmly while learning about its history with a guide.
Who is this itinerary ideal for?
This trip is recommended for travelers visiting Cusco for the first time, who have about a week available and want a complete, relaxed experience that combines culture, nature, and good organization.

Best time of year for this 6-day route
The Cusco + Humantay Lagoon + Machu Picchu route can be done all year round, although weather conditions directly affect the experience.
April – October (Dry season)
Between April and October you’ll find the best combination of weather and travel conditions for this 6-day trip. During this period, days are mostly clear and the chance of rain is low, which improves visibility on all routes (Cusco, the visit to Machu Picchu, and the hike to Humantay Lagoon)—perfect for photography.
July – August (Peak season)
In July and August, weather conditions are still part of the dry season, but this is also when the number of visitors is highest. Demand for Machu Picchu tickets, train seats, and hotels increases significantly, so for these months it’s essential to plan ahead. Although the weather is excellent for traveling, the main spots on the itinerary will feel much busier.

November – March (Rainy season)
From November to March, rain is more frequent, especially between January and February, but during these months the landscapes are greener, there are fewer travelers, and prices tend to drop. This period is a good option if you prefer fewer tourists, although you’ll need to stay flexible with your itinerary, since some excursions—such as Humantay Lagoon—may be affected by weather conditions.
Important tips before you travel
Before you start this 6-day route through Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Humantay Lagoon, it’s important to consider a few key points to ensure a comfortable and well-organized experience. Acclimatizing to the altitude is essential, so your first days should be taken slowly, staying well hydrated and avoiding intense physical effort. This will help you enjoy the excursions scheduled for the following days much more.
Another useful tip is to plan ahead when buying your Machu Picchu tickets and train tickets, especially in high season, since availability is limited. As for packing, make sure to bring clothing suitable for changing temperatures, comfortable walking shoes, and protection against sun and rain. And don’t forget to carry cash, as some remote areas don’t accept cards or may lack signal for digital payments—this will make your trip much smoother and safer.
Finally, having travel insurance and following the instructions of local guides provides extra peace of mind and greatly improves your overall tour experience.

Why this 6-day route is perfect for discovering Cusco

It’s designed for travelers who want to see the essentials of the region without rushing, with a clear and carefully planned route.
Culture
The route lets you discover Cusco’s historical importance through visits to the city and Machu Picchu, two of Peru’s main cultural icons. The itinerary gives you enough time to get to know—and truly understand—the Inca and colonial legacy. Some of the key historical places you’ll visit include:

Nature and adventure
Adding Humantay Lagoon to the itinerary brings in a strong nature component that perfectly complements the cultural side of the trip. This excursion gives you direct contact with Andean landscapes, native flora and fauna, and a moderate hike—ideal if you’re looking for nature and accessible adventure.
Ideal pace
A smart distribution of the six days prioritizes a gradual travel rhythm, beginning with light, relaxed walks at the start of the trip as you adapt to the altitude, then moving on to the days that require more physical effort, and finally ending with a calmer day.
This structure lets you enjoy each destination at your own pace, improving your overall experience and making the trip suitable both for active travelers and those who prefer a more relaxed pace.
