Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa is located on the northern side of the Plaza de Armas in the city. History of the Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa
On August 15, 1540, the city of Arequipa was founded by Garcí Manuel de Carbajal, marking with a cross the place where the church would be built. The Arequipa Cathedral was constructed in the 17th century under the supervision of architect Pedro Godínez, after the city’s founding. However, the first structure was destroyed by a fire in 1583. Throughout its history, the cathedral has been remodeled several times due to the constant earthquakes affecting the region, with the 1868 earthquake being one of the most devastating. The last major reconstruction took place in the 19th century under the supervision of architect Lucas Poblete, who gave the cathedral its impressive current neoclassical facade.
Architecture and Features of the Cathedral
The Arequipa Cathedral is a magnificent example of neoclassical architecture, with Renaissance and Gothic details that make it a unique work. Its sillar facade extends along the entire Plaza de Armas, with its imposing towers visible from various points in the city. The cathedral is divided into three naves, separated by side aisles, and decorated with a vaulted ceiling. The facade features three portals, with a set of seventy Corinthian columns. Although it has a single main nave, which is unusual for traditional cathedrals, this design gives it a more modern and spacious appearance.
Interior of the Cathedral: Art and Religious Relics
The interior of Arequipa Cathedral is equally impressive, with its solidity and decoration in every dimension. Inside, there are pieces of great value with religious motifs, such as paintings, sculptures, and reliquaries. “The Loret organ,” the cathedral’s organ, is one of its most impressive treasures. UNESCO recognized the cathedral as a World Heritage site due to its historical and architectural importance.
On its facade, two bronze medallions can be seen, symbols of the Peru-Bolivia Confederation, as well as three large porticoes. Inside, there is a main altar made of Carrara marble from Italy, crafted by Felippo Moratilla, and a wooden pulpit carved by French master Rigot.
The cathedral has a museum. In the “Treasures of the Cathedral” room, visitors can admire high-quality liturgical objects and works of art in goldsmithing. In the room dedicated to Ornaments, Fabrics, and other religious items, ecclesiastical garments are displayed, some of which are no longer used in current liturgies. Additionally, the “Religious Paintings of the Republic” room showcases five works by the Tacna painter Francisco Laso. This exhibition is accompanied by informational panels that tell the story of painting in Peru during the viceroyalty and republican periods, allowing a better understanding of the artistic and religious context of the cathedral.
